Summer Camp for Gifted Middle School Students?

Attention Parents and Teachers of Gifted Middle School Students:

A few dedicated folks, with a passion for gifted children are beginning to form plans for a not-for-profit “traditional” weeklong, summer camp for gifted students in Wisconsin.  However, before plans go any further, we would like to get a better understanding of the need and desire for such a camp experience for middle school students.  If you are the parent, grandparent, teacher, etc, of a gifted middle school student, we are asking you to complete the linked survey to help us continue moving forward with our plans.  For the purpose of planning we are defining “Middle School” to be students having completed 6th-8th grade and between the ages of 10-14 years.

What do we mean by a “traditional” summer camp?

  • Cabins with bunk beds
  • Swimming beach with canoeing and kayaking
  • Mess hall style eating
  • Campfires and cookouts
  • Limited technology

What do we mean by gifted programming?

  • This camp will be relational, participatory, a safe place to be gifted and different from home or school
  • Staff trained in working with gifted students will be on site
  • In addition to traditional camp activities, all other activities will be geared toward meeting the needs of advanced learners.
  • Some of those activities may include:
    • Environmental activities
    • Archeology
    • Leadership
    • S.T.E.M.
    • Astronomy
    • Writing
    • Art
    • Challenge courses and team building

If it appears that the camp is a viable plan for the summer of 2017 we will get information out by the end of February.  We will only have spots available for 60 students this summer so it is important to indicate your interest early and register soon after the information is released.

The following is the link for the survey:

Thank you so much for your time and thoughts!

If you are willing to pass this information along to others we would be grateful!
